Have you ever thought of seeking advice and guidance somewhere else? In America, the use of herbs is significantly overshadowed by dependence on modern medicine. Big Pharma and pill-pushing doctors have made us believe we need those drugs to cure our symptoms and diseases.

While most Americans blindly follow the white coat, know that 75 percent of the global population still use traditional, herbal healing practices to get better. Herbal medicine has been around for more than 5,000 years. These time-tested natural remedies use herbs to promote health and prevent and treat illness and pain.

A clinical or medical herbalist, your trusted health care provider

Unlike modern medicine, the primary focus of a certified medical or clinical herbalist is to treat people as individuals irrespective of the medical condition they have. While conventional physicians use strong, toxic pharmaceuticals to tackle the symptoms, herbalists use living or dried plants and lifestyle changes to help the body heal itself.

Medical herbalists treat the whole person, not just the disease. Therefore, a herbalist will offer you a solution that goes far beyond curing your symptoms. They will dig deep until they find the root cause of the disease. (RELATED: Learn more about natural remedies at Remedies.news)

“Rather than just placating a symptom we try to treat the root cause by uncovering the factors that have contributed to the condition,” Humble Leaf, a California-based herbalist in service of ancient wisdom and your health, told Medium.

As reported by the American Herbalists Guild, in 1987 about 85 percent of modern drugs were derived from plants. Today, only 15 percent has a plant origin. Herbal medicines are prepared from plants or plant parts which contain hundreds to thousands of other compounds.

Unlike herbal medicines, most pharmaceuticals are highly refined and purified single chemicals synthesized in a lab. These compounds are difficult for the body to process and cause an array of side effects. Today, science is beginning to demonstrate that the synergistic effect of the different compounds in herbs play a fundamental role in the safety and effectiveness of herbal medicines.

Does it really work?

Herbs can offer a broad range of safe and effective therapeutic agents to prevent and treat diseases while optimizing overall health. Seeking out the help of a herbalist is not merely replacing a pill for a plant, it goes much further than that. They will take other factors such as emotional and social balance into account.

Herbal medicine is the art of treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. Illness and pain are the only signals your body can send to let you know something is out of balance. Instead of masking the underlying cause through the treatment of symptoms, a herbalist will help you search for the underlying reason.

Take chronic stomach issues for example. Conventional doctors may prescribe a pill to ease stomach acids or improve digestion, while a herbalist will seek a solution to what’s causing the health issues and treat the underlying condition rather than the symptoms it causes. This can be anything ranging from food allergies to stress or depression.

Some cases are complicated, deep rooted, and take a while to unravel, said Humble leaf. However, once a clinical herbalist is able to figure out what is causing the symptoms, clients experience profound and enduring benefits way beyond the clearing up of a condition. Next to being symptom-free, people often report feeling happier and healthier than before.

Our body and mind are closely intertwined. When our body struggles, our mind will struggle too and vice versa. Therefore, popping pills will not offer a long-term cure as it doesn’t cure the underlying reason. Hence why diseases or symptoms often reemerge after quitting conventional treatments.

What about their safety? When used appropriately, the majority of herbs used by clinical herbalists have no adverse side effects.

“Based on published reports, side effects or toxic reactions associated with herbal medicines in any form are rare. In fact, of all classes of substances reported to cause toxicities of sufficient magnitude to be reported in the United States, plants are the least problematic,” stated Norman Farnsworth, Ph.D., professor of pharmacognosy at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Beat cancer naturally: Discover the healing wonders of turmeric /turmericnews/2016-04-12-beat-cancer-naturally-discover-the-healing-wonders-of-turmeric.html /turmericnews/2016-04-12-beat-cancer-naturally-discover-the-healing-wonders-of-turmeric.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/turmericnews/2016-04-12-beat-cancer-naturally-discover-the-healing-wonders-of-turmeric Turmeric is one of those little wonders of nature – spices that not only enhance the taste of food, but also contain a concoction of beneficial compounds that modern science is just recently discovering. It is a staple spice in Middle Eastern, Northern African and Southeast Asian cuisine, and is mainly responsible for the yellow tint in curry spice blends. It also makes a great addition to many soups, salads and meats.

Aside from its culinary versatility, turmeric also contains compounds called curcuminoids, which provide a variety of medicinal properties. Curcumin, one of these compounds, has been found to be one of the most potent cancer-killing substances in nature because of several of its therapeutic properties. Curcumin helps rejuvenate and detoxify the liver, reduces the effects of iron overload (which is important, since iron with wormwood is also cancer-killing), increases the body’s antioxidant capacity, improves cognitive function, regenerates neurons, reduces the likelihood of Alzheimers’ and depression, reduces the risks of heart disease and inflammation and fights premature aging.

Curcumin literally kills cancer

Cancer cells are generally characterized by abnormal and uncontrolled growth which invades the body’s other processes. They do this by circumventing a normal cell’s apoptosis, or the tightly regulated cell-suicide mechanism found in healthy cells. The cell suicide process is crucial for replacing approximately 100 to 130 billion cells per day in the human body. When cancer cells turn off the suicide switch, they multiply and disrupt the body’s natural regeneration process.

Curcumin activates the cell-suicide mechanism in these cancer cells in ways that we are still learning. One of these ways is by activating enzymes that cut up the proteins within the cancer cells, effectively killing them. Unlike chemo drugs, curcumin does not have a single method of killing cancer, and it curiously does not damage healthy tissue via a mechanism we still do not understand. Thus, curcumin does not build up a resistance to cancer cells, unlike chemo, and also has much fewer adverse side effects.

Make curcumin available to the body

Unfortunately, the liver inhibits the body’s absorption of curcumin through a process called glucuronidation, which makes the compound much less effective than it could be. Fortunately, however, you can increase its bioavailability by consuming any of the following:

  1. Black pepper – Piperine, the alkaloid responsible for pepper’s pungency, inhibits certain enzyme metabolism functions, increasing curcumin absorption up to 2,000%.
  2. Beneficial fats – Healthy fats like avocado, olive oil and coconut oil help the body absorb curcumin, since it is a fat-soluble substance.
  3. Quercetin – This is a plant flavonoid that inhibits the enzyme that deactivates curcumin. Quercetin can be best found in capers, but is also found in red wine, onions, green tea, apples, cranberries, red lettuce, raw kale, chicory greens, raw spinach, snap beans and raw broccoli.

Studies demonstrate turmeric’s healing properties could rival several synthetic drugs /turmericnews/2016-03-29-studies-demonstrate-turmerics-healing-properties-could-rival-several-synthetic-drugs.html /turmericnews/2016-03-29-studies-demonstrate-turmerics-healing-properties-could-rival-several-synthetic-drugs.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/turmericnews/2016-03-29-studies-demonstrate-turmerics-healing-properties-could-rival-several-synthetic-drugs Turmeric is one of the most researched organic substances in the world because of its remarkable natural healing properties. The spice is widely used in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine, and is responsible for curry’s yellow tint.

Its primary active component, curcumin, has been the subject of over 5,600 peer reviewed and published studies. Now, researchers at GreenMedInfo, an organization dedicated to providing scientific, evidence-based information, have released results showing that turmeric has over 600 potential preventive and therapeutic applications, as well as 175 distinct beneficial physiological effects.

Remarkably, studies have also shown that it compares very favorably with several medications:

Lipitor / Atorvastatin (cholesterol medication)

A 2008 study published in Drugs in R&D found a favorable comparison of a standardized preparation of curcuminoids from turmeric to the drug atorvastatin (trade name Lipitor) for endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and reductions in inflammation and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetics.

Corticosteroids (steroid medications)

A 1999 study published in Phytotheraphy Research found that curcumin could be used to treat chronic anterior uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease, comparing favorably to steroids. A 2008 study in Critical Care Medicine showed that curcumin compares favorably with dexamethasone, a corticosteroid drug indicated for lung transplantation-associated injury, by down-regulating inflammatory genes. Similar favorable comparisons with the drug was also published in 2003 in Cancer Letters in a lung iscahemia-reperfusion injury.

Prozac/Fluoxetine & Impiramine (antidepressants)

A 2011 study in Acta Polniae Pharmaceutica confirmed curcumin’s favorable depression-diminishing properties, in comparison with both drugs.

Aspirin (blood thinner)

A 1986 study in Arzneimittelforschung discovered curcumin’s potential for treating arthritis and vascular thrombosis through its anti-platelet and prostacyline modulating effects in comparison to aspirin.

Anti-inflamattory Drugs

A 2004 study in Oncogene revealed that curcumin and reserveratrol (a natural chemical found in grapes and blueberries) could replace ibuprofen, sulindac, phenylbutazone, naproxen, indomethacin, diclofenac, clecoxib and tamoxifen in treating inflammation.

Oxaliplatin (chemotheraphy drug)

A 2007 study in the International Journal of Cancer found curcumin to be comparable with the drug in colorectal cancer as an antiproliferative agent.

Metformin (diabetes drug)

A 2009 study in Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Community found that curcumin activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and suppresses gluconeogenic gene expression, increasing glucose uptake and suppresses its production in the liver. Curcumin (in the form THC) was actually found to be 500 times to 100,000 times more potent than metformin in activating AMPK and its downstream target.

What if someone could invent a magic pill that protected us from some of the worst diseases on the planet? Imagine the joy of the pharmaceutical companies – and what they’d charge us to buy it.

Well, I have news that Big Pharma doesn’t particularly want to hear. The ingredients for that pill are probably already right there on your kitchen shelves: in a packet or bottle labelled turmeric.

Since the turn of the century, more than 50 clinical trials have tested curcumin – the pigment in turmeric that gives it that bright yellow colour – against a variety of diseases.

These show that the spice may play a significant role in preventing or treating lung disease, brain disease and a variety of cancers – including multiple myeloma, colon cancer and pancreatic cancer.

Tumeric: A super food you can easily add to your diet /turmericnews/2016-03-10-tumeric-a-super-food-you-can-easily-add-to-your-diet.html /turmericnews/2016-03-10-tumeric-a-super-food-you-can-easily-add-to-your-diet.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/turmericnews/2016-03-10-tumeric-a-super-food-you-can-easily-add-to-your-diet If you’re a regular reader of health news, you have certainly seen the recent articles praising turmeric as a super food.

(Article by Heather Morton,  republished from http://www.kitsapsun.com/lifestyle/tumeric-a-super-food-you-can-easily-add-to-your-diet-2a0af07f-99b1-2f12-e053-0100007fa9d2-370424791.html)

Turmeric, or Curcuma longa, has been used in many cultures as a food and medicinal agent for thousands of years. You have probably noticed it being sold as a supplement in vitamin sections and supplement shops everywhere.

Turmeric is one of the most heavily researched plants in botanical medicine. The most widely studied medicinal constituents of turmeric are known as curcuminoids, which are present in the orange root-stem part known as the rhizome. Curcumin is the most active of these curcuminoids and has been found to inhibit several inflammatory enzymes. Thus, the anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric are widespread throughout the body. If you have something that’s inflamed, it is likely turmeric can help modulate or calm the inflammation. In addition to being an inflammation modulator, turmeric has many other benefits, including the following:

Stimulation of the liver and gall bladder to make and release bile. This results in a powerful digestive aid ideal for treating symptoms of dyspepsia or indigestion as a result of fat malabsorption, which also improves the absorption of fat soluble vitamins (A,D, E, and K). Do you belch excessively or get heart burn after eating? Have you ever been told you have a Vitamin D deficiency or do you suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD)? Including turmeric in your whole foods based diet will probably help.

In individuals with high cholesterol or highly coagulable blood, turmeric lowers plaque build-up in the arteries via inhibition of platelet, or clotting, activity. Caution is needed for those taking Warfarin, a blood thinner. Seek advice from your health care provider.

A useful antimicrobial for fighting infections. You can find turmeric in many over-the-counter supplements used for treating the common cold or intestinal bug. It can also be used topically in a paste to treat skin infections, but be warned, this will leave a temporary stain on skin and a permanent stain on clothing.

There is evidence turmeric may prevent cancer by protecting our DNA from free radical damage.

Turmeric supplements are frequently recommended and helpful for all forms of arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Recent research demonstrates turmeric is useful for prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

With all these amazing benefits, you may want to incorporate turmeric into your daily life. Luckily, this is easy and delicious! We have included recipes for one of our favorite traditional Ayurvedic beverages, a delicious creamy cauliflower dish, and a sweet treat. These are easy and relatively quick recipes to make. Note the importance of adding black pepper or consuming with fat for optimal intestinal absorption of the active constituents.

PU Professor and Team Find Turmeric Can Prevent, Cure Colorectal Cancer /turmericnews/2016-03-10-pu-professor-and-team-find-turmeric-can-prevent-cure-colorectal-cancer.html /turmericnews/2016-03-10-pu-professor-and-team-find-turmeric-can-prevent-cure-colorectal-cancer.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/turmericnews/2016-03-10-pu-professor-and-team-find-turmeric-can-prevent-cure-colorectal-cancer Dr R Baskaran, an Associate Professor from Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pondicherry University brought accolades for the country when a team of researchers headed by him, in collaboration with Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, have taken a significant stride in uncovering the mechanism by which curcumin, a bioactive ingredient of turmeric, commonly used in every household in India, can not only prevent but also can effectively cure colorectal cancer.

(Article by Pradeep Kumar, republished from http://www.newindianexpress.com/lifestyle/health/PU-Professor-and-Team-Find-Turmeric-Can-Prevent-Cure-Colorectal-Cancer/2016/03/09/article3318498.ece)

The significant finding was published in the international journal “molecular and cellular biochemistry’ on March 2, 2016.

Explaining about his discoveries, Dr R Baskaran said Curcumin, derived from the dietary turmeric (Curcuma longa) is an effective anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant agent.

This gives yellow colour and this has the preventive properties against the Colorectal Cancer (CRC). We have compared normal and colorectal cancer cells from humans, and if you consume turmeric, it prevents cancer by killing the cells causing intestinal cancer, said the Associate Prof with the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology of Life Sciences of Pondicherry University.

Dr R Baskaran, who began research on the project, said one of the problems is the bio-availability since Curcumin absorption in the intestine is limited. We are studying a combination of Curcumin with other anti-cancer agents to increase Therapeutic efficiency and speed of recovery.

The Associate Professor, who was working in USA for 20 years before joining Pondicherry University in 2012, said “it will take more than two years to prepare a drug and we are continuing experiments with non-toxic, anti-cancer compound agents.

He said the studies on the effect of curcumin on the entire cell death process, both in tumor and normal cells are useful for the ongoing preclinical and clinical investigations on this potential chemo-preventive agent.

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is a critical health concern because of its incidence as the third most prevalent cancer in the world. Although compared to western country colorectal cancer is low in India but because of changes in food style, there is an increased risk.

According to ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research), the number of CRC-related deaths is estimated to be approximately 608000 worldwide, accounting for 8% of all cancer deaths and making CRC the fourth most common cause of death due to cancer.

In India, the annual incidence rates (AARs) for colon cancer and rectal cancer in men and women are 4.4 and 4.1 per 100000, respectively.

According information gathered, while curcumin’s chemoprevention property is well documented its ability to kill colorectal cancer cells is not known. To this end, Dr. R. Baskaran and his research group previously reported in a series of publications that human Non-polyposis colorectal cancer cells (HNPCC) arising due to genetic mutations in mismatch repair genes (MMR) are highly sensitive to curcumin due to unrepaired DNA damage.

Dr Baskaran has published more than 50 articles in internationally renowned journals such as Nature, PNAS and Molecular Cancer.

Even in conditions such as Behcet’s disease turmeric is highly recommended due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric has long been popularized by its therapeutic benefits which are thought to come from its phytochemical called curcumin.

“Curcumin doesn’t just contain anti-inflammatory properties but also antibacterial and antioxidant properties among others” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson Michelle O’Sullivan.

This disease is otherwise known as the Behcet’s syndrome. It is considered a rare disorder that results in inflammation in the blood vessels throughout the human body. This inflammation is also believed to lead to the development of a wide range of symptoms.

The signs and symptoms of Behcet’s disease may vary from one person to another. However it typically causes skin rashes eye inflammation mouth sores genital sores and lesions. While the exact cause of the condition has not been identified yet it is thought to be an autoimmune disorder.

One of the most unfortunate consequences of having the condition is the development of the symptoms. Painful mouth sores in the mouth can result in painful ulcers. The skin lesions may also appear as well as acne-like sores.

Individuals who suffer from the condition may also have sores in the genital areas such as the vulva or scrotum. These sores often come in a form of ulcerated red lesions. Eye inflammation such as a condition known as uveitis may also take place.

The condition also affects the joints vascular system digestive system and the brain. Individuals who notice some of these symptoms should see a healthcare provider. For individuals who are already living with the ailment they need to practice a healthy diet.

A diet that is healthy is one that can regulate or reduce the inflammation inside the body. There are certain foods that are called pro-inflammatory and they are the ones that sufferers should avoid. Examples of the pro-inflammatory foods are junk foods sugar high-fat meats and fast foods.

Sufferers are also recommended to consume anti-inflammatory foods and beverages such as kelp salmon green tea and turmeric. Turmeric is one of the most powerful and popular anti-inflammatory ingredient nowadays.

According to studies turmeric through its anti-inflammatory properties are as effective as certain medications such as steroid and creams. Behcet’s syndrome sufferers may consume the therapeutic properties of the spice through taking curcumin supplements
